On April 28, 2025 local time, Foreign Minister Wang Yi explained China's position on adhering to multilateralism and safeguarding multilateral trade rules when attending the BRICS Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Rio de Janeiro.
Wang Yi said that multilateralism is the cornerstone of the international order after World War II, and unity and cooperation are the greatest common divisor of the international community. However, some countries have severely deviated from their understanding of the world. The United States engages in unilateralism, takes priority from its own country, and places its own interests above international public interests. The current international system supports the stability and prosperity of the world, but the United States, as the biggest beneficiary of this system, is heading towards its opposite. People have seen that the jungle law of the prey on the weak openly, coercion and bullying no longer need to be disguised, and the development foundation of international relations is constantly threatened.
Wang Yi stressed that maintaining multilateral trade rules is the most urgent issue at present. The essence of trade is complementary advantages and mutual benefit and win-win results. It is not a calculation for whoever suffers or whoever takes advantage of it, nor can it become a tool to realize one's own selfish interests. The United States has benefited a lot from free trade for a long time, but now it uses tariffs as a bargaining chip to ask countries for prices. If you choose to remain silent and compromise and retreat, it will only make the bully more and more likely. The BRICS countries should jointly oppose all forms of protectionism, resolutely safeguard the multilateral trading system based on rules and the World Trade Organization as the core, safeguard their core values and basic principles, and promote the liberalization and facilitation of trade.
