Foreign Ministry spokesperson answered reporters' questions on remarks from the US President and Finance Minister

Xinhua News Agency, Beijing, April 23 (Reporter Cao Jiayue) Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun answered reporters' questions on the remarks of the US President and Treasury Secretary at a regular press conference on the 23rd.

A reporter asked: According to reports, US President Trump told reporters that we get along well with China and will not take a tough attitude when negotiating with China. The 145% tariff on China is indeed very high. After the agreement is reached, the US tariff on China will be significantly reduced, but will not be reduced to zero. China must reach an agreement with the United States, otherwise it will not be able to do business with the United States. If an agreement is reached between the United States and the United States, it will be done as the United States says. The United States is the party that sets the rules. U.S. Treasury Secretary Bescent said the coronavirus pandemic is essentially a trade embargo. The U.S. goal is not to decouple China, and the two countries may reach a comprehensive agreement within two to three years. Negotiations with China on such an agreement have not yet begun. What is China’s comment on this?

Guo Jiakun said that China has long pointed out that there are no winners in tariff wars and trade wars, protectionism has no way out, and decoupling and breaking chains will only isolate itself. China's attitude towards the tariff war launched by the United States is very clear. We are unwilling to fight and are not afraid of fighting. Fight, accompany you to the end; talk, the door is open.

Guo Jiakun pointed out that if the US really wants to resolve the problem through dialogue and negotiation, it should stop threats and blackmail and talk with China on the basis of equality, respect and reciprocity. While saying that we will reach an agreement with China, we will continue to put extreme pressure on it. This is not the correct way to deal with China and it will not work.
