The new ways to renovate physical education classes in colleges and universities - new technologies make classrooms more "smart", sports clubs make options richer, and scientific guidance makes exercise more efficient... Various innovative measures have given birth to "hot products", which have received praise from many teachers and students, and have promoted the continuous development of physical education in colleges and universities toward high-quality development.
Beijing University--
Physical education classes are more "wisdom"
An interesting digital physical education class is underway in the smart health station of the Qiu Deba Gymnasium of Peking University. "Come on, surpass him!" Accompanied by the shouting, Li Haofu, a student of Peking University Guanghua School of Management, was competing with three classmates in a rowing machine. The large screen in front of the classroom shows the movement trajectories of the four "boats" in real time, and the crocodiles in the picture seem to be urging them to speed up their sprints.
Dynamic bicycles, rowing machines, skiers, mountaineering machines... There are a variety of intelligent sports equipment placed in the space of less than 200 square meters. "With digital technologies such as virtual reality, we can experience various outdoor sports without leaving school." After that, Li Haofu and his classmates stood on the ski machine excitedly, picked up snow poles, put on smart glasses, and galloped on the "snow path".
With the rapid development of digital technologies such as artificial intelligence, big data, and virtual reality, the introduction of emerging technologies has become an important direction for improving physical education in colleges and universities. Qian Junwei, director of the Physical Education Teaching and Research Department of Peking University, introduced that opening digital physical education classes is a key link in the construction of the school’s digital sports “Ten One Projects”. Actively promote the construction of smart venues, health stations and other projects, providing guarantees for the development of digital physical education classes.
In the spring semester of 2024, Peking University officially launched the first digital physical education class in universities in the country that uses virtual reality and other technologies, and was sold out once it was launched. "The course covers physical exercise, sports science, artificial intelligence, data analysis and health management. Relying on smart facilities, students can improve their sports interest and cultivate comprehensive abilities in simulated competition." Qian Junwei said.
"I have consumed more than 200 calories today!" Speaking of digital physical education classes, Song Yifei, a student at the School of Journalism and Communication, said that the classroom is more interesting and exercise is more scientific. Students receive matching bracelets before class, and real-time data such as heart rate will be displayed on the screen. "These data allow us to intuitively understand our exercise effects, and the teacher will also evaluate our physical condition based on the data," said Song Yifei.
"Some students' heart rate rises too fast, and we will promptly remind them to adjust the rhythm." In the view of teacher Wu Dingfeng, digital physical education classes are very intelligent. "In the past, students' training effects were not good at quantifying. Now teachers can clearly grasp the students' exercise progress and tailor fitness plans for each student, which will help improve the physical health level of college students." In his opinion, digital physical education classes are a useful attempt to improve physical education teaching.
In addition, Wu Dingfeng added project management, product design and other modules to the course to share excellent sports digital projects with his classmates. "Can the playground be upgraded to a smart runway?" "Can the smart fitness equipment in the community be connected to the medical system?"... The students were enthusiastically discussing the future application of digital sports. (Reporter Yan Yiqiao)
Yunnan University—
Students love to take physical education classes
"I didn't expect that the courses that were transferred became a favorite." At 7 pm, Cha Yingjie was still swinging on the tennis court.
A year ago, this freshman from the School of Marxism at Yunnan University was transferred to tennis because he was full of badminton classes. With the mentality of "mixed credits", he came to the stadium reluctantly and even wanted to apply for a change of classes due to frustration. It was not until he suddenly got to know the ball suddenly drew a beautiful arc in the air, and that sense of accomplishment made him fall in love with tennis class. He realized that the spark of love might be hidden in the breakthrough after continuous attempts.
According to the new regulations issued by Yunnan University in 2021: students who fail to meet the physical test standards will not be able to obtain a graduation certificate. Yunnan University has refined the requirements for physical education teaching: each physical education class includes physical testing exercises, strengthening basic physical fitness, and guiding normal exercise; increasing the number of physical testing times, allowing students in different grades to choose test periods based on their own situation; introducing public physical education teachers for several consecutive years, and providing health care classes for students who are not suitable for sports, and opening test-free channels for students suffering from major diseases or injuries.
Cha Yingjie used to have poor athletic ability, and it was difficult to complete the long-distance running without meeting the standards and pull-ups. However, in order to complete the campus long-distance running task of 120 kilometers per semester, he had to run several kilometers every day. Gradually, Cha Yingjie's long-distance running performance improved. He used to start breathing after running two laps, but now he doesn't feel tired throughout the whole journey of 1,000 meters. "When we feel happiness in physical education classes, those moments of sweating and moments of breaking through ourselves will be transformed into energy to pursue greater progress," said Cha Yingjie.
"The physical test standards are actually 'strict but not harsh'. I weigh more, but I can pass it smoothly if I exercise more." said Wang Zhen, a student at the School of Business Administration and Tourism Management.
Data shows that in 2018, the pass rate of students from Yunnan University's physical test was less than 70%, and the pass rate in 2023 and 2024 had exceeded 90%.
As more and more students develop exercise habits due to physical testing, Yunnan University has begun to work hard to enrich the content of physical education courses. Wang Zongping, dean of the School of Physical Education of Yunnan University, introduced that Wang Shuai, a tennis special project, offered a pick-ball class, Shu Ke, who was born in sports dance, launched a fitness dragon dance class, and basketball coach Wang Yihan developed a flag football class; there are also frisbee classes, expansion training, and "body fitness and body shaping" that can reduce weight even if it is credited... These newly opened sports elective courses were stolen as soon as they were launched. In Wang Zongping's view, the increasingly abundant physical education courses help students gain health and happiness.
"Compared with the deserted past, the playground is becoming more and more lively now!" said Cha Yingjie. (Reporter Yang Wenming)
Qingdao City College—
There is a "sports supermarket" here
On the green field, students from the Frisbee Club ran and passed by; on the lake, the kayak team members followed the coach's slogan and paddled hard; on the rock climbing wall, the students sprinted toward the peaks "flying the eaves and walls"... Walking into Qingdao City College, sports figures can be seen everywhere.
The school carries out physical education teaching in the form of a club, not only covering common projects such as football basketball, table tennis and badminton, swimming, etc., but also introduces new projects such as frisbee, yoga, and fighting to meet students' personalized fitness needs. "It's like going to a 'sports supermarket', choosing your favorite project, and you'll be more motivated to practice," said Chen Jiale, a student at the School of Computer Engineering. This semester, she joined the rugby club and the training was very hard, but she was in a happy mood.
Since the establishment of the first sports club in 2008 and to the formal inclusion in the teaching system in 2017, Qingdao City College has currently established 23 sports clubs. The school solicited student opinions and conducted argumentation and offered courses, breaking the limitations of traditional physical education courses and building a new model of physical education teaching that is student-centered, interest-oriented, and ability-cultivated.
In order to ensure the high-quality development of the club, the school has introduced professional talents to serve as instructors and conducts layered teaching based on students' sports level. At present, the school's students' sports participation rate has reached 97%, and the annual physical test scores have steadily improved.
Yan Shu, a student at the School of Accounting and Finance, joined the billiards club together. After a semester of study, she not only mastered her skills, but also became a billiards referee. The members of the club have a clear division of labor: some are responsible for interview recruitment and activities expansion, while others are responsible for equipment maintenance. "The club teachers encourage everyone to be 'one-study and multi-tastic' to guide us to learn how to fix poles, take ruling or participate in management. These are all valuable experiences," said Liu Jintao, a student at the School of Foreign Languages.
In addition, the school encourages students to participate in volunteer services, ruling and other activities in various sports competitions. In the past two years, about 200 students have obtained professional qualifications in sports (practice), which has increased the possibility of life.
Seeing students moving from clubs to broad stage, Kou Liaoyuan, the assistant principal of the school, was very happy. "We will continue to explore the diverse value of sports, realize the educational goals of sports people, and let students have a brighter future." (Reporter Sun Longfei)
