Preliminary results of Philippines midterm elections come out

Xinhua News Agency, Manila, May 14 (Reporter Yang Yunqi and Zhang Yisheng) Preliminary statistics of the midterm elections released by the Philippine media on the 14th showed that the Senate election situation in which Philippine President Marcos is located was not as good as expected, and many former President Duterte's family won local elections.

Statistics of more than 97% of the votes show that the Marcos camp won 6 of the 12 re-elected seats in the Senate in this midterm election. Duterte's camp followed closely behind and won 5 seats. Among them, one of the elected MPs received support from both the Marcos camp and the Duterte camp, so both sides classified him as their winning seats. The remaining 2 seats are obtained by other parties.

Previously, data from multiple local polling agencies showed that the Marcos camp was expected to win 7 to 8 Senate seats.

In the local election, Duterte won the mayoral election of Davao City by an overwhelming advantage and was elected mayor for the city for the eighth time. The Duterte family has another four members who have won the positions of Deputy Mayor, Member of Congress, and Councillor of Davao City.

In March this year, Duterte was arrested at Manila International Airport and is currently detained at the International Criminal Court in The Hague, Netherlands. Under Philippine election law, the arrest of a candidate does not result in his or her disqualification from the election. Therefore, Duterte's victory this time has legal effect.

According to Philippine media reports, the results of the Senate election will directly affect the political future of Vice President Sarah Duterte. Sarah was impeached by the House of Representatives in February this year, and the new Senate will vote on Sarah's impeachment later this year. The passing of the impeachment case requires two-thirds of the members of the Senate to receive support.

In addition to the Senate election, this midterm election also re-elected all seats in the House of Representatives and will determine the candidates for local officials in provinces and cities across the country. At present, the vote counting work is still continuing, and the Philippine Election Commission said that the official results of the midterm elections are expected to be announced within this week.
