Xinhua News Agency, Rio de Janeiro, April 29 (Reporter Chen Weihua and Zhao Yan) On April 29 local time, the meeting of official BRICS members and partners of foreign ministers was held in Rio de Janeiro, and Wang Yi, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Minister of Foreign Affairs, attended. Brazilian Foreign Minister Vieira presided over the meeting, and 19 foreign ministers and senior representatives discussed strengthening global southern cooperation and adhering to multilateralism.
Wang Yi said that 11 years ago, President Xi Jinping proposed the BRICS spirit of openness, inclusiveness, and win-win cooperation, and clarified the direction for the development and growth of the BRICS mechanism. Yesterday, President Xi Jinping made a special visit to the headquarters of the BRICS New Development Bank and sent a strong signal that China firmly supported the New Development Bank, hoping that the New Development Bank and the BRICS family would take the path of modernization together. We see that along the way, the BRICS countries have more and more partners, and the road to cooperation is getting wider and wider. Today's BRICS family has a total population of more than half of the world and accounts for nearly 30% of the world's total economy, and has become the "first echelon" of the global south.
Wang Yi stressed that in the face of hegemony, the BRICS countries must adhere to their principles and be the "main force" in maintaining fairness and justice. In the face of unilateralism, the BRICS countries should stand at the forefront and be the "backbone" to promote unity and cooperation. The "Big BRICS" should shoulder the heavy responsibility of the times, work with the global South, safeguard and practice multilateralism, and promote the building of a community with a shared future for mankind.
First, we must defend the core position of the United Nations. As the core of the multilateral system, the authority of the United Nations can only be strengthened and cannot be weakened. The "Big BRICS" should continue to advocate consultation, joint construction and sharing, jointly resist all counter-actions in this world, safeguard the basic norms of international relations, defend the multilateral trading system, promote international institutional reform, and build a more fair and reasonable global governance system.
Second, we must promote the peaceful settlement of disputes. Practice the concept of common, comprehensive, cooperative and sustainable security, and adhere to the peaceful means to resolve disputes and differences. China is willing to work with the international community, especially the BRICS countries, to gather international consensus on political resolution of the Ukrainian crisis and continue to play a constructive role in achieving true peace. We support the Gaza recovery and reconstruction plan recognized by Arab and Islamic countries, firmly support the "Palestinians and Pakistan" and the international community should support Palestinian independence and state building with greater strength.
Third, we must create an international environment for open cooperation. Faced with the United States' arbitrary imposition of tariffs and provoking a global trade war, China's answer is clear and its position is firm: if we insist on fighting, we will accompany us to the end; if we are ready to negotiate, we must respect equally. What China focuses on is not only its legitimate rights, but also the common interests of all countries; what China safeguards is not only reciprocity and cooperation, but also international rules; what China adheres to is not only national and national dignity, but also the bright world in the world.
Wang Yi said that BRICS member states should open their doors and open their arms to help partner countries deeply integrate into BRICS, participate in cooperation fully, and keep the development of the mechanism full of vitality. We must continue to expand the "BRICS+" model and gather together with more like-minded countries for peace and development. China will actively implement the concept of "high-quality development of the Big BRICS cooperation" and the concept of "five major BRICS" proposed by President Xi Jinping, support Brazil to fulfill its duties as the President, and jointly open up a bright prospect for BRICS cooperation.
The foreign ministers at the meeting said that in the face of intensified geopolitical tensions and rising protectionism, the most urgent task is to adhere to multilateralism, adhere to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, and safeguard the core role of the UN in the international system. BRICS countries should focus on peaceful coexistence, openness, inclusiveness, dialogue and cooperation, oppose political polarization narratives, jointly defend free trade rules and the multilateral trading system with the WTO as the core, and promote the construction of a more just and sustainable multipolar order. Foreign ministers at the meeting were generally worried about the adoption of "reciprocal tariffs" measures to undermine global supply chains and intensify uncertainty in the international situation, and demanded the removal of unilateral coercive measures such as economic sanctions and sub-sanctions that violate WTO rules and international law.
